What currency is used in Colombo, Sri Lanka?
The primary currency in Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR). Rupee is the much preferred currency, but you may occasionally be able to pay for some items in hotels in foreign currencies such as US or Aussie dollars. Be aware that hotel exchange rates are often poor. You will need rupees in all rural areas and when dealing with local shop owners. Many forums suggest converting money once you get to Colombo to get a better exchange rate than you will from vendors in your home country.
