First steps
Think you’ve been scammed, or your OFX account has been compromised? Do the following:
- Stop all further communication with the suspected scammer.
- Contact OFX immediately. We can lock your accounts to stop further access and loss.
- Review your account for suspicious activity.
- Report the incident to the appropriate authority in your region.
- Secure your identity using the tips and tools below.

When you contact us to report a suspected or confirmed incident, one of our specialists will take all possible steps to support you.
- Our team will record your situation securely in our internal systems.
- If there’s any suspicious activity, it will be escalated to our global Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) team.

After contacting OFX and reporting the scam/fraud, it’s recommended you also contact:
- Your bank or financial institution
- Taxation Office
- Raise an alert with your region’s credit agency, (eg. Experian, Equifax, TransUnion and Innovis) to help prevent unauthorized applications for credit.
Also warn your friends and family. Awareness is an important step in prevention.
Tips for staying safe online
No matter where you are in the world, these are universal tips to help you protect yourself:
- Use two-factor authentication on your accounts, especially email and banking accounts.
- Never share your OTP (one-time password), passwords or security details with anyone. OFX staff will never ask you for this information.
- Secure your personal documents at home, at your work, in the cloud and when you travel.
- Keep device security updated, and use antivirus software for laptops or smartphones, to protect against attacks from new viruses and hacking attempts.
- If you receive an SMS or phone call about a data breach or issue in your account, hang up and login into your account to validate.
- Be cautious on social media. Adjust privacy settings and limit how much personal information you post or reveal. Especially about holidays and dates you will not be home.
- Don’t click suspicious links in emails or texts. If you’re unsure, go directly to the official website.
Identity protection checklist
Prevention is priceless. Help protect your personal information with these tips:
- Securely store important documents containing personal information, like drivers’ licence, passport, bank statements, utility bills or credit card receipts.
- Shred or destroy unwanted documents to avoid your personal information falling into the wrong hands.
- Monitor your credit report, credit card and bank statements regularly, for suspicious activity.
- If you move, advise your Bank, utility providers, mobile phone provider etc of your new address to avoid mail theft and compromised personal information.
- Report any lost or stolen ID documents, such as passports, licences, credit cards and cheque books, to the organisation that issued them.
- Immediately inform your financial institution such as your Bank or credit card provider of any unusual transactions on your statement.
- Request an alert on your credit file to flag any suspicious credit applications.
