What influences the CAD/THB exchange rate?

The Thai baht is an emerging market currency that has seen substantial volatility in recent years. After the death of Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej in October 2016, Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn began his reign 1 December 2016. How the new king will impact the economic and political landscape remains to be seen.

The Canadian dollar (CAD) works under a floating exchange rate regime. Therefore, the CAD exchange rate may be determined by supply and demand. Other factors that might influence CAD’s value include commodity prices, interest rates, and inflation rates.1

The Bank of Thailand manages the nation’s foreign exchange rate according to the Exchange Control Act.2 This act oversees every matter that involves foreign exchange, and it allows the Bank of Thailand to regulate foreign currency, though certain transactions could be completed with hardly any restrictions or approval from the Bank.
